One of the up and coming make-up artists in the fashion industry is Dariia Day, who’s making her mark with the best of the best in the business such as Pat McGarth’s team, but also holding strong on her own.
She has built an impressive resume just in this past year by working for renowned brands like CR Fashion Book, ELLE, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Vanity Fair, Louis Vuitton, V Magazine and many more. I love following her journey on Instagram, where she documents her behind-the-scenes work.
Dariia also just finished off her show season in Milan and Paris working for Prada, Bottega Veneta, Roberto Cavalli, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli, Nina Ricci, Loewe, Maison Marta Margiela, Jean Paul Gaultier and Louis Vuitton.
Dariia has a bright, kind personality and is super down-to-earth. In this interview, she shares her secrets to achieving the flawless skin we have been seeing on the runways, natural looking make-up that can be re-created for every day. Plus, she lists her five make-up essentials and five must-have brushes.
How can we re-create the look of fresh, dewy skin and minimal make-up that is seen on runways and on models off-duty?
First and the most important is to take a good care of your skin as a daily routine. Simply put, the better your skin is, the less coverage you need to use.
For that, I would recommend to exfoliate and moisturize your skin; I like to use La Roche Posay – Toleriane. For the daytime, protect yourself from the sun – using, for example, Anthelios SPF 50 Mineral Tinted Facial Sunscreen by La Roche-Posay – and remember to drink a lot of water. Those I would say are the basics to keep skin in good condition.
To achieve a beautiful, dewy look, I like to start with a mist of rosewater on the face. After I apply moisturizer, I use Sanoflore Organic Ancient Rose Floral Water. Massage your face to absorb the spray and improve circulation.
The next step will be foundation. For a minimal look, I like to use light consistency make-up, like the water-based Face & Body Foundation from MAC Cosmetics. The best way to apply it for a dewy effect is to use your fingers. Where the skin needs extra coverage, I use Secret Camouflage by Laura Mercier.
For a sun-kissed look, I would also recommend to slightly warm up the skin with a touch of bronzer (slightly darker than your skin tone) on your cheeks, on the top of your forehead, and across the nose.
Then, you can use your favorite lipstick as a blush! Take a tiny bit on your finger, and apply to the apples of your cheeks, blending well. This looks more fresh and natural on the skin than powder blush.
To get an extra glow, you can apply a highlighter on the top of your cheeks, on the cupid bow (above the lips), down the line of your nose, and on the inner corners of the eyes. At the moment my favorite is RMS Living Luminizer.
To finish the look, use a lip balm to slightly groom your eyebrows. An optional step is applying mascara.
What are your top 5 make-up kit essentials, the must-haves you can’t live without?
1. Bioderma’s micellar cleansing water – always in my kit, it’s very efficient and perfect for sensitive skin.
2. Eight-hour Cream by Elizabeth Arden
3. Dior Show Iconic Mascara
4. Shu Uemura eyelash curler
5. Secret Camouflage by Laura Mercier
How do you deal with a bad skin emergency when being on set? Such things can happen, right?
For irritated skin, I like to use a mist of rose water, which brings relief.
Often, especially during Fashion Week, the models have irritated skin around the eyes. For this problem, I found an amazing eye cream from Poland – Flos-lek – with natural ingredients including euphrasia and aloe.
When the skin is very dehydrated, I massage it with a few drops of face oil from Clarins.
What are your top 5 make-up brushes?
1. I love the lip brush from Tom Ford. It makes application easy, clean, and well-defined.
2. A traditional Japanese brush by Hakuhodo is great for applying blush.
3. I really like to use artist brushes. The pointed shape is great for sculpting the face.
4. A Foundation Brush from MAC Cosmetics, the 187 duo fibre face brush – I have 4 of those. 😉
5. A brush for the eyebrows, such as MAC’s 204 Lash Brush, is a must-have.
